Miners Who Break Rules.
Several Offences at Cadeby.
Mr. W. M. Gichard, solicitor, Rotherham, prosecuted on behalf of the Denaby and Cadeby Colliery Co., Ltd., in a number of caste where persons were charged with breaches of rules.
In the first case Thomas Swift, miner. Denaby, pleaded guilty to drawing out the front timber before the back portion. He was fined a sovereign altogether.
There was a more serious charge against Holbert Pearson who pleaded “guilty in self-defence.” Mr. Oichard said there were some words between Pearson and another man, whom defendant struck with his safety lamp, smashing the glass. That was a very dangerous thing for anyone to do.
A witness bore out Mr. Gichard’s statement, and the Chairman having severely reprimanded defendant for his action, ordered him to hand in half a sovereign and the costs, 17/6.
Samuel Ribstone, a Cadeby deputy, stated that David Nuttall, on June 1st, was riding his pony in the return airway of the mine without the permission of the authorities. He was fined 5s and costs.
For a similar offence James Joburns, a Denaby, clipper, was fined 10/- and costs.
Mr. W. M. Gichard said this was a serious offence, because the defendant by his action had caused a collision of tube, involving danger to those working in the vicinity.
Herbert Flinders, miner, of Denaby, pleaded guilty to doing an act likely to endanger the safety of the mine, and he had to pay 20/-.
John Rooney, filler. Denaby, admitted that he failed to put a drag on a couple o’ tubs. He said there was no drag on the roads to be used. But he had to pay a pound.
