Mexborough and Swinton Times, April 14.
At Conisborough on Good Friday.
Dominic Brannon, Pedler, Hull, was charged with using obscene language at Conisborough, on the 5th inst., and also charged with having sold indecent prints at the same time and place.
PC Sowray was on duty at Conisborough on the 5th
inst. at 3.30 p.m., in plain clothes in company with PC Blacker when he saw the prisoner walking along the road, carrying a board with cards on.
He was seen to produce some pictures from his pocket, saying, “I have got some better ones here.” To those who wouldn’t buy he used obscene language. There was a crowd of people around. The prices of the pictures range from 6d to 5 shillings.
When spoken to, he said he had a special licence to sell the pictures.
The prisoner gave evidence denying that he used obscene language at all, and that he had sold the pictures for a considerable time without complaint. The officers wouldn’t have made a case, only they brought the charge of obscene language against him.
The Bench had some doubts in the first case, and dismissed it, but put on the full penalty of five pounds, or in default of payment one months hard Labour, in the second case.
