Oliver Greathead
Conisborough has lost a vigorous personality by the death of Mr. Oliver Greathead, of The Bungalow, Low Road, Conisborough, at the age of 54 years.
Mr. Greathead, who was a partner in the local firm of joiners and undertakers, had been ill since the early part of this year and spent a considerable period in a Doncaster nursing home, where he had a leg amputated.
Recently his condition had improved and when his many friends saw him being wheeled round the village in an invalid chair, hopes were entertained of a recovery. Last Friday, however, he had a relapse and passed away on Sunday without regaining consciousness.
Mr. Greathead, who served in the York and Lancaster Regiment during the last war, was a prominent figure in Conisborough and was known to almost everybody. He was a member of Conisborough Cricket Club, a former chorister at Conisborough Recreational Institute and an Air Raid Warden. He was also a noted campanologist, having assisted on many occasions in the ringing of the bells at Doncaster Parish Church and at many other surrounding parishes.
The funeral took place at Conisborough on Wednesday, the large cortege being headed by the Parish Verger, Mr. W. Burton, the Vicar of Conisborough, Canon H. Trevor Eddershaw, and the Rev. Fred Herrington.
