Fatal Accident at Denaby Main
William Harwood, between 2 and 3 years of age, the son of Frank Harwood, miner, was run over by a cart belonging to the Denaby Main Colliery Company on Thursday afternoon last week, and killed.
The driver of the cart was a man named John Stables. He was driving off some children from one side of the cart, when the deceased come up on the other able, and was knocked down, the wheel passing over his head. Dr. Huey was sent for, but the child died in a few minutes.
Mr. F. E. Nicholson, district coroner, held an inquiry into the case at the Station inn, Conisborough, on Friday.
Frank Harwood, miner, of 39 Rossington street, Denaby, the father of the said the boy was 2 years and 7 months old. He last saw him alive at 25 minutes to one at noon on the Thursday. Witness was in bed, having been on night duty. He next saw the deceased at 3.30, when he was brought into the house insensible, with his head crushed and his shoulder broken. The child died at a quarter past four o’clock.
John William Stables, carter at Denaby Main Colliery, and living in Church street, Mexborough, said that on the previous (Thursday) afternoon at about half past three o’clock he was drawing an empty coal cart in Rossington street, towards Denaby. He was in the cart driving with reins. Three boys climbed up behind the cart on one side and he sent them off, but he did not see the deceased on the other side and did not know he had ran over him until he saw him picked up. William Whittam was driving a cart in front. The child cried a little when picked tip. Just before the accident someone threw a stone which hit witness on the head. The horse was walking at the time of the accident
Wm. Whittam, driver, Denaby, said that his cart was in front of Stables’ cart. His (witness) child called out to him to stop, and on looking over the far side of the cart he saw the head of deceased under the wheel of Stables cart. Before he could get out Mr. Hancock picked the child up.
The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
