Conisbrough & Mexborough – Amalgamation

October 1921

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Thursday 13 October 1921

Don Valley Councils and Amalgamation.

The Conisborough Urban Council last night accepted an invitation to discuss with the Mexborough Urban Council the principle of amalgamation of the two districts.

Mr. John Brocklesby urged the Council not to meet Mexborough. To discuss this matter was almost to commit themselves in favour of it. Union with Mexborough at the present time was, he thought, out of the question. His idea on the subject was that, when Mexborough’s affairs were as well managed, and their rates as Iow as Conisborough’s, the Conisborough Urban Council would then be prepared “to take them in.”

Mr. W W. Norwood expressed similar views. It would be a waste of time to receive a deputation from Mexborough. A conference would simply mean a lot of useless talk with nothing at the end of it.

Mr. E. Dutton said it would be only common courtesy to receive and hear the deputation. To decline the invitation would make it appear as if they were afraid of Mexborough.

Mr. S. C. Urch explained that in the days of the Parish Council, Conisborough were approached on this matter, and a deputation attended one or two conferences. Conisborough eventually retired from the conference because they were busily engaged in a movement to secure urban powers. He would like to hear what the Mexborough Council had to say.

In the course of further discussion, Mr . H. Finney said that he, for one, was in favour of amalgamation if it was likely to make for the progress of the whole district.

The Clerk was instructed to write to the borough Council, stating that the Conisborough Council ; while not committing themselves in any way whatever, were prepared to meet a deputation on the matter.
