“Company, ‘Shun”

Conisbrough Urban Council’s new Chairman Coun. I. Houghton, was sergeant-major in World War I

The Council’s retiring Chairman, Coun. G. Oldfield, held the same rank in the same war; and the Council’s new vice-chairman, Coun. D. Sheldon, was a quartermaster-sergeant in the 1914-18 War.

At the Council’s annual meeting on Monday, Coun. Sheldon said that he was in the 8th Battn. of the York and Lancaster Regt. and Coun. Oldfield was in the 9th Battn. “We did not see one another very often but we were not far away,” he added.

With a twinkle in his eye, Coun. Sheldon, paying tribute to Conn. Oldfield’s courtesy as Chairman, said: “He carried out his duties very well he did not bawl and shout as if we were on the parade ground!”
