Denaby United and their Future
Club Management Board Issues Important Statement
On behalf of Denaby United, the chairman, Mr. T. Holmes, yesterday issued the following important statement.
“In view of the present crisis regarding the future destiny of the Midland League and bearing in mind that 11 of the present members of the League have already resigned or expressed their intention to do so, leaving six member clubs only, the Management Board of Denaby United and the Auxiliary Supporters’ Club are very deeply concerned regarding the maintenance of a good football team worthy of the 57 years tradition which stands behind the club and for which period they have been members of the Midland League.
“We have continuously, and still do, pledge our loyalty to the Midland League, and are of the opinion that should the League fail to function next season it will be a very hard blow to football in general and more so to our own club.
In Other Directions
“We are, under the circumstances, compelled to look in other directions for a League likely to supply a class of football as near Midland League standard as possible. Several Leagues have been suggested at a recent emergency meeting of the Board and the Supporters’ Club, the best of which, to our mind, appears to be the Cheshire League, and should we be compelled to apply to another League for membership this would appear to be the one likely to supply the class of football traditional to Denaby.
“However, on Sunday, May 1st, 1960, the six remaining and loyal Midland League clubs, namely, Frickley, Goole, Gainsborough, Worksop, Skegness and Denaby, are meeting in Doncaster to discuss our future destiny and after this meeting we may be in a position to say where we may be playing football next year.
“The Board have for a number of weeks appealed to the Management Committee of the Midland League for a meeting to be called to discuss our position along with the other member clubs. Our appeals, along with others, have apparently fallen on stony ground and a feeling of apathy appears to exist among these people. Why this should be we fail to understand, seeing that our president is Mr. J. Richards, who is also President of the Football League.
Loyalty to Midland League
We repeat that our loyalty lies with the Midland League and we are hopeful that our administrators will find ways and means of ensuring that this competition continues and so relieve the extreme anxiety at present being borne by the loyal people who devote much of their spare time, free of charge to keep the flag flying at Denaby.
“We appeal to our supporters to be tolerant for the time being as we are -confident that things will, eventuality come back to normal and however hard and difficult the struggle may be, the Management Board will spae no effort to ensure that the class of football traditional to Denaby is maintained
