A child whose death occurred at Mexborough on Saturday had the christian names Bruce Belfrage.
A pithead canteen to provide full meals for some six hundred workmen is to be opened at Dearne Valley Colliery on Wednesday, July 29th.
Mr. Tom Smith, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fuel and Power, has appointed Mr. Frank Collindridge, M.P. for Barnsley, as his Parliamentary private secretary.
Seventeen teams competed in the fourth annual competition promoted by Frickley Colliery Ambulance Brigade at South Elmsall on Saturday. Winners were: 1 Grimethorpe (422 points), 2 Manvers Main (408), 3 New Stubbin (402).
The income of the Montagu Hospital, Mexborough, for the first six months of 1942 amounted to £11,711, an increase of £2,901 over the corresponding period of 1941. During the same period of 1942 the expenses increased from £11,593 to £12,759.
Mrs. Turner, Abdy Farm, Swinton, will open the garden fete next Thursday in the grounds of the Nurses’ Home at the Montagu Hospital. The event is being organised by the Ladies’ Committee and the usual attractions are being provided.
Lord Halifax reached England from America on Sunday night, accompanied by Lady Halifax, and he expects to remain in this country for some weeks before returning to his post as British Ambassador at Washington. He is anxious to spend a few days at his Yorkshire home, but at present cannot say when he will be able to leave London.
A number of men who volunteered to return to pit work when the war-time call for more labour in the mines was made, ceased work at Hickleton Main Colliery on Saturday. They had received a week’s notice on the grounds of redundancy. The men, over 20 in number, are all over 65, and are therefore eligible for the old age pension. It is understood that their services have been dispensed with, as they are no longer able to maintain the exacting physical standards demanded in wartime pit work.
Yesterday (Thursday, July 9th) was the anniversary of the Cadeby Colliery disaster, in which 88 men lost their lives in 1912.
Rotarian T. W. H. Ford, of Swinton, was formally installed as President of Mexborough and District Rotary Club at the weekly gathering of the club on Tuesday.

A pit-head canteen to provide full meals for some 600 workpeople is to be opened later this month at Dearne Valley Colliery. The canteen has been provided under the Miners’ Welfare scheme.
On Sunday. August 16th, a musical programme in which Manvers Main Band and West Melton Victoria Male Voice Choir will take part, will be broadcast from the bottom of Manvers Main No. 6 Pit.
