Policemen in Conisborough and Denaby

I am told a number of policemen in Denaby last Sunday for the purposes of keeping the peace was eight. What are we coming to!

Surely we need Sunday closing to be compulsory, or some other Radical reform, in order that the sanctity of the Sabbath may be recognised better, that decent folk probably not be ashamed of turnout of doors. The drunkenness in this district is most reprehensible.

I don’t envy the Sergeant at Conisbrough the job he has in hand. The cells at the police station accommodate more prisoners than ever, and seeing that his work and that of his wife as so much increased, he had better imitate the miners and go in for – well, he can’t demand an eight hours day, but he might perhaps expect an increase in pay!
