Thomas Levers
Mr. Thomas Levers (71) of Tickhill Street, Denaby Main, died last Thursday. He was born at Denaby Main and in his early days he was a well-known captain of Rotherham Harriers.
A sports paper of January 1897 referred to Mr. Levers as follows: “His first race was at Denaby in August 1893 when a gentleman made him a present of a silver watch for running small track about 10 yards in circumference in 38 minutes.” He won races at Milton, Maltby, Goole and in 1895 won a two-mile hurdle race and several one-mile handicaps starting from scratch. Other places at which he had successes were Methley, Wath, Clay Coss, Hull, Rotherham etc and at Sheffield in 1896 he helped his club to win the championship of the Sheffield District Cross Country Association.
He Was employed at Denaby Colliery until retirement, having been an underground worker all his life.
The funeral took place on Monday at Denaby cemetery. Mourners were: Mrs. Levers (Widow), Miss P. Levers, Mr. and Mrs. T. Levers, Misses M. and E. Levers, Mr. and Mrs. H. Levers, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. D. White, Mr. D. Jones, Master D. Jones, Mrs. Parton and Mr. A Parton. Funeral arrangements were by F. Burdett of 22 Wheatley Street, Denaby Main: Tel.
