Letter to Denaby Girls from General Montgomery

Two Denaby girls, Misses Kathleen Boyes, 7, Marr Street, and Kathleen Naughton, 16, Strafford Terrace, have this week had a reply to a letter they wrote to General Montgomery a month ago, expressing their admiration of his achievements at the head of the Eighth Army.

The General’s reply, which was in his own handwriting, took the form of an air mail letter card, addressed to Miss Boyes. He wrote:

“Thank you and Miss Naughton so much for writing to me. I am glad to hear your boy friends are out here. We must obtain a final victory, and can then return home honourable men.”

In their letter the girls had made reference to the fact that their boy friends, Gnr. Fred Swindells, of Mexborough, and Pte. E. Fennell, of Denaby, were serving in theMiddle East.
