Savings Concert
Conisbrough Workers’ Celebration
A gathering of the National Savings workers of Conisbrough Urban District was held at Denaby Church Hall on Monday, when certificates of honour awarded to savings groups achieving their target in “Wings” Week were presented to over 60 group secretaries by Mrs. B. H. Pickering, of Stone Grange, Maltby.
Before the presentation an enjoyable concert was given by Conisbrough Modern School Choir (trained by Mrs. A, Westlake) and students of Miss Constance Nichols, L.R.A.M., L.G.S.M., A.L.A.M. As a concluding item the girls gave a stirring rendering of “Land of Hope and Glory.” Miss Nichols’ dancing pupils gave a dainty and pleasing performance. A corps de ballet included Gwen Lines, Betty Oxer, Freda Woffinden, Pamela Nelson, Shirley Oxer and Susan Horne. Gwen Lines and Betty Oxer gave “Dutch” and Beryl Fisher gave a tap dance and a dance entitled “The Rose.” Other pupils of Miss Nichols taking part were I. Barnett, E. Brocklesby, M. Easterbrook, M. Milner, S. Oxer, S. Prince, A, Watson, J, Watson, and H. Wheelhouse.
Mr. I. K. Heatherington, chairman of the Entertainments Sub- Committee, which was responsible for arrangements, presided at the presentation and compared. Mr. Heatherington welcomed Mrs. Pickering to whom a bouquet was presented by Miss I. Moss, secretary of the sub-committee, Mrs. Pickering thanked Conisbrough Savings Committee for inviting her. She thanked the artists for an excellent performance and congratulated the street group secretaries on their excellent performance in “Wings “’ Week. As she was secretary of a street group herself, she realised what hard work it was making the regular weekly tour of houses. It was these regular contributions that mattered in the movement, far more than the big drives.
Proposing a vote of thanks, Mr. F. Dabbs, secretary of the local Savings Committee, said he felt the evening had been very successful and thanks were due to the Entertainments Sub-Committee and the artists. Meetings of group sectaries were very infrequent and he suggested they meet together in the future more often. Mr. Dabbs also thanked Mrs. Pickering and all who had helped. Up to the previous Saturday since the start of the savings campaign. Conisbrough people had saved £471.000 They had a membership of 43 per cent.
The treasurer, Mr T. C. Campbell seconding, appealed for the people of Conisbrough and Denaby to reach the half million mark by the end of their year and so to celebrate Conisbrough Savings Committee’s Fourth birthday.
Mr. Rowbotham, Assistant Regional Commissioner for National Savings, congratulated the group secretaries on putting Conisbrough up to third place in Yorkshire war savings. He hoped in the Raise the Standard Campaign they would enlist more people in the army of savers in preparation for the next big drive in the summer of 1944.
