Artist and industry

In Pudsey, the owner of an Iron  Foundry has set aside part of his workshops for the use of sculptor Barbara Freeman so that she can complete work too large for her home studio. She s working a structure in steel for the new Morley Place School in Conisbrough; the work was specially commissioned by the Headmaster, Mr. C. W. James.

Miss Freeman, whose sculpture is becoming increasingly well known, has had many exhibitions in Yorkshire and has work in public and private collections here and in the U.S.A. She is married to playwright David Brett,

Shared work

Mr James told the “‘South Yorkshire Times” yesterday (Thursday) that the only terms of reference he had given Miss Freeman was to produce something which would depict, as far as possible, the working life of the school or its philosophy.

“lt will be sited where the general public can easily see it so that they can share with us this piece of aesthetic work,” he said. “I hope they will appreciate this gesture, and the community as a whole will respect the building.”
