Brutal Assault on A Policeman
A cowardly and aggravated assault was committed on a police constable on Saturday night at Denaby. A noisy party of men were in the neighbourhood of the colliery, about half past eleven, evidently disposed to be noisy, and some of them were using indecent language. Police constable Kendall, who was on his beat at the place, remonstrated with them, requesting them not to continue their disgusting conversation.
As they took no notice, the officer got hold of one of the men with the intention of locking him up. The others thereupon set upon him, one of them hitting him violently on the mouth, knocking him down. They then took him lower down the road, where it was quieter and more isolated, and took his staff from him and belaboured his head most unmercifully.
The officer was conveyed to Dr. Blythman’s surgery at Swinton, where his injuries were attended to.
