Unlawful Interference

At Rotherham, on Saturday, the hearing was resumed of the 47 charges against men and women for unlawfully interfering with workmen at the Denaby Main Colliery, on the 20th March.

Two of the defendants, Samuel Hopkinson and Thomas Stokes, were each fined £10 and costs. In the remainder of the cases the magistrates fined 13 men 40s. and costs, and 16 women 20s. and costs; they dismissed 13 summonses, adjourned one. and two were withdrawn.

Notice of appeal was given.

Forty-two summonses were afterwards proceeded with for unlawful interference ou March 21st. and it was shown that on this occasion about 2,000 persons were present, marshalled in order to annoy the workmen as they left the pits, and that stones were thrown.

The proceedings, after lasting yearly nine hours, were adjourned for a week.

Samuel Hopkinson, one of the defendants fined, was afterwards charged on a warrant with striking a witness. The case was adjourned till Monday.
