Another Batch of Gamblers

Amos Rose, Jos Wrigley, Edwd Child and Chas. Farrar, all Denaby colliers, were charged with gambling on the highway near Conisboro’, on the 17th ult.

Sergt. Morley stated that on Sunday, the 17th inst., he and P.C.’s Garnett and Midgley dressed in private clothes went into a hut on the side of the M.S. & L. Railway, and there hid themselves. They remained there until about 3 p.m. About 3 o’clock a large number of men from Conisboro’ and Denaby came along, and commenced playing at pitch and toss. There would be from 100 to 200 of them. First they commenced dog racing and then gambling. There was a hut at some distance. The 8 defendants and some little lads were gambling, while half a dozen “look-outs” just in front of the hut were stationed to whistle and beat a warning.

P.C.’s Garnett and Midgley corroborated the evidence of previous witnesses.

The defendants denied the charge, but the bench considered the case proved, and fined Wrigley, Child and Martin 40s. each and costs, 10s. 6d. — James Bowen, who did not appear, and who had previously been convicted, was sentenced to go to Wakefield for 1 month, without the option of a fine.
