South Yorkshire Colliery Lodges & Dismissal of Mr. Chappell.

December 1879

Sheffield Independent – Monday 29 December 1879

The South Yorkshire Colliery Lodges and the Dismissal of Mr. Chappell.

The firm position taken by Mr. Chappell, agent of the South Yorkshire Miners’ Association, and his dismissal from that office, have caused a meeting to be held in the Wath district, for the purpose of considering the desirability of at once forming a new South Yorkshire Miners’ Association.

The meeting was adjourned for the further consideration of the subject. It is stated that amongst the lodges which are likely to form the intended federation will, in all probability, be found those of Denaby Main, Manvers Main, Thrybergh Hall, and one of the Thorncliffe lodges, and others who approved of Mr. Chappell’s policy in opposing the restriction of the output and the stoppage of the pits. It is reported that application has been made by several Derbyshire lodges to join the new Union if one is formed.

There can be no doubt that if the lodges named agree to form a new association, Mr. Chappell will be at the head. The position in which he stands with the coalowners of the district, and his past experience, will do much towards building up a new society.
