Cruelty To Pit Ponies.

Frederick Jow, trammer, Mexbro’, was charged with cruelty to a pony at Denaby Main Pit, on April 29, at ten a.m. Mr. Rhodes, solicitor, prosecuted.

William Vaux, horsekeeper, said he saw the defendant yoke a pony to corves, and then kick it on the hind leg without speaking to it. Defendant struck the pony twice with a large piece of wood.

Fined 10s. and costs, or 14 days’ imprisonment.

Patrick McCabe, horse driver, was charged with a similar offence on May 5th, at Denaby Main Pit.

John Whitehouse, driver, said the defendant kicked the horse under the belly three or four times. The animal was a stupid one.

Mr. Chambers gave evidence as to the nature of the injuries caused.

The fine was 10s. and costs, or 14 days’ imprisonment.

Smoking In A Pit.

Henry Hepworth, miner, was summoned for a breach of colliery rules at Denaby Main Pit.

Mr. Rhodes said this was one of those cases where there had been smoking in a pit, and the man was caught with a pipe in his pocket.

As the man had absconded to avoid the summons he applied for a warrant, which was granted.
