Denaby Main 116   Darton  78

This match was played at Denaby on Saturday last. Great interest being taken in the contest a large number of spectators were present. The visitors’ captain won the toss, and sent in Scargill and Roberts to the bowling of W. and F. Hoyland.

The bowlers being in good form the first six batsmen were got rid of for 13 runs. Bagshaw and Smith then came in, and the former, by a really good innings, raised his score to 28, when he was run out. The latter hit hard for 16 runs, but he was afterwards caught by W. Hoyland. The remaining batsmen raised the total to 78.

After a short interval the Denaby captain sent in Beardsley and F. Hoyland. The first named ran himself out when the score was 17. Wofinden followed, and played carefully for his runs. F. Hoyland was stumped after playing a grand innings of 17. W. Hoyland came in, and, with the assistance of E. Mountford, the score was raised to 68, both playing in grand style. Roper followed, and, after making 6 runs, was joined by the captain (Mr. W. H. Chambers), who was bowled after playing good cricket for 17, Roper carrying out his bat for 19, thus leaving the home team victorious by 38 runs.

At the conclusion of the game both teams adjourned to the new schoolroom, where a substantial supper was provided by Mr. Webbe, of Denaby. After a pleasant evening the National Anthem brought the proceedings to a close.
