Denaby Main & Manvers Main Employees Excursion
The annual excursion of the Denaby Main employees was run on Saturday last to Cleethorpes, where a pleasant day was spent, the weather being all that could be desired. Upwards of eight hundred tickets were sold, and it is stated to have been one of the most enjoyable trips the men have had.
The outward journey was made in excellent time, as was also the return, Mexboro’ being reached at a reasonable hour. On the same day the Manvers Main workmen proceeded to Blackpool, two trains being heavily ladened with upwards of thirteen hundred passengers. A start was made from Mexboro’ about 5.30 a.m. Blackpool being reached at 10 a.m., after a good five hours and a half run. The day being beautifully fine it is needless to add that a pleasant day was spent. The return journey was commenced at 8.25, Mexboro’ being safely reached shortly before 2 a.m.
The arrangements of the trip had been admirably carried out by the secretaries, Messrs. Baker and Stacey, to whom much credit is due. Mr. Thomson (the manager), and Mr. Ward (underviewer), accompanied the men on their excursion, and likewise enjoyed the outing. It should be stated that the Manvers Main Colliery Company generously contributed £30 to the funds of the trip, thereby reducing each workman’s fare one shilling.
