Conisbro’ Flower Show

The fifth annual exhibition of flowers, fruits, vegetables, and farm produce, in connection with the Conisbro’ Horticultural and Cottage Gardeners’ Society, was held yesterday, in a large marquee, on ground adjoining The Dale, the residence of Captain Johnson. The weather was beautifully fine, and it being the tradesmen’s half-day holiday at Doncaster and Mexbro’, there was a large attendance. The Castle ruins and the picturesque crags also proved very attractive.

The show was opened at one o’clock, by Mr. C. Searle, the president. The balance sheet of the society showed the sum of £11 1s. 6d. in the bank at the close of the last exhibition, compared with a balance of £5 10s. 6d. after the preceding show, and this was owing to the good patronage received, but there has been a falling off in the matter of subscription. The exhibits, yesterday, were far in excess of the number shown last year, and more money was offered.

The open class comprised greenhouse and stove plants, and, although there were but three competitors, their contributions would have done credit to a show of much larger pretensions. The amateur section was deficient as regards plants, but there was a large and creditable display of fruit and vegetables, and a fair show of cut flowers. The cottagers showed some good cut flowers, and there was keen competition in respect to vegetables.

The judges were Messrs. C. Parkinson, of Rotherham Cemetery; and W. B. Yeadon, gardener to Mr. H. E. Hoole, of Ravenfield Park. The awards were as follows:—
