A Startling Sight
On Monday last, when the train which reaches Mexboro’ at thirteen minutes to twelve was just putting out of the Conisbro’ station, an infant was observed to drop from a third-class carriage to the ground.
The train was stopped, and the little one picked up. It was fortunately only found to be slightly bruised. The presumption is that the carriage door had not been fastened.
Had the accident occurred when the train was going at a rapid speed, there is little doubt that the child would have been frightfully mangled under the wheels, but this was happily not so.
Severely Scalded
On Monday morning, two labourers at the Conisbro’ Brick and Pipe Works were seriously scalded. It appears that six of the workmen were standing together in front of a steam pipe, warming themselves, when, on a larger quantity of steam being put on, the valve burst, and two of the men, named Elijah Snare and Joseph Hallam, were severely scalded.
We are informed that had a larger quantity of steam been put on than was the case, the whole of the six men would have been killed. Medical attendance was called to the injured men, and hopes are expressed that they may be able to resume work after the lapse of a few days.
