Assaulting an Auctioneer

Joseph Sreet,  collier, Denaby, was charged with assaulting Walter James Gill, auctioneer, Mexborough, at Denaby.

Mr. F. Parker-Rhodes appeared for the complainant and Mr. Clegg for the defendant. Mr. Rhodes stated that on the 8th inst. the complainant was employed by the agent of the Denaby Colliery to levy a distress for rent on the house occupied by the defendant. On entering the house he was violently ejected and pushed out. He got up and again attempted to do his duty, when he was struck and kicked and thrown out.

The defence was that the complainant had no authority to enter the house, the warrant not being legal. The Bench took an opposite view, and fined the defendant 10s. and 12s. 6d. costs, or 10 days’ imprisonment.
