Sheffield Independent – Monday 12 March 1883
Doncaster Board of Guardians.
A meeting of this board was held on Saturday, Mr. Frank presiding.
A letter was read stating that at a meeting of the ratepayers of Conisbro’ Mr. Hawksworth had been elected assistant-overseer by a clear majority.
One of the defeated candidates, Mr. Allen, wrote to say that the voting was irregular; it was by ballot, each person having a slip of paper on which to write the candidate’s name he wished to vote for, and one person voted 16 times, another 5, a third 3 times, and three voted who were not householders.
It was resolved to refer the letter to the chairman of the meeting, the Rev. J. G. Wood, and to write to the Local Government Board for a fresh order giving the guardians power to appoint a collector, some of the guardians being of opinion that it was unnecessary to continue the two offices of assistant-overseer and collector.
