The New Railway Station

The new railway station which is being erected at Conisborough will, it is estimated, be completed on or about August 1st, if the weather remains favourable.

On the down side of the line there are to be four waiting rooms — a first-class gentlemen’s, first-class ladies’, second-class ladies’, and a general room. They are all to be elegantly fitted up for the accommodation of passengers. In addition there will also be a commodious house erected for the station-master, and general offices.

The up platform is to be 156 yards long, ladies’ and gentlemen’s waiting rooms are to be erected, and a verandah 40 yards in length will be built for the accommodation of the general public. Everyone will rejoice to learn that the scheme also includes a bridge for passengers, which will be placed from the up platform to the turnpike road, so that passengers will not be under the necessity of crossing the line.

It was at first contemplated to make a subway, but at a meeting of the engineers it was decided it would be more advantageous for the passengers to have a bridge.

In connection with the new station there will be many improvements, not the least important of which will be the construction of new sidings. The plans of the work were drawn up ten years ago, but were not proceeded with in consequence of the negotiations for the making of a new line from Wansworth to Shireoaks.

It was considered at that time that should the proposed scheme be successfully carried out it would be better to erect a station nearer the village than the present one, and effect a junction with the new line. The scheme was abandoned and the Company decided to proceed with their old plan.

The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Company are sparing no expense on the station and there is every probability that the building will, when completed, be an ornament to the pretty village. The old station is to be pulled down, and the site will be occupied by sidings.

The traffic between Sheffield and Barnsley is somewhat heavy, from 200 to 250 trains passing Conisbro’ station daily.

Mr. Wortley, of Doncaster, is engaged in building the new station.
