Gambling at Conisbro’
Geo. Brown, collier, Denaby, and Thos. Whittaker, glassblower, Conisbro’, were charged with gambling on the previous Sunday at Conisbro’.
Police-constable Guylee said about three p.m. on the day named he was on duty in Denaby Road, Conisbro’, in company with Police-constable Kendall, when he saw the two defendants and several others tossing coin. He was only about 15 yards distant from them. Two little girls passed and told them that the police were watching them. They left the spot, and shortly afterwards commenced gambling again. He saw money change hands.
Whittaker denied that he had been gambling, and said he had not had a halfpenny about him all the day.
Police-constable Kendall said he heard the defendants calling out when the coins were being tossed in the air.
The Superintendent of Police said that gambling at Conisbro’ was as bad now as ever it was, and the Bench inflicted a penalty on Whittaker of 5s. and costs. Brown, who did not appear, was fined 10s. and costs.
