Conisbrough Cemetery Consecration
During the previous nine months correspondence had taken place between the Archbishop of York and the Conisbrough Burial Board regarding the consecration of the newly acquired cemetery.
At a meeting of the Burial Board held on Wednesday, a letter dated from Bishopthorpe, York, 19 February 1894, was read. In the letter, the Archbishop of York’s private secretary, Robert A. W. Booker, stated that the Archbishop had been unable to raise the question of burial grounds in the House of Lords. As a result, the matter would have to remain pending until the next parliamentary session.
The letter further explained that, given the present situation and the possibility of an unfavourable response from the Government, the Archbishop did not consider it advisable to proceed with the consecration at that time.
Following the reading of the letter, Mr. Booth proposed, and Mr. W. H. Chambers seconded, that the entire correspondence should be submitted to the Home Secretary. It was also remarked that it was high time the issue was resolved.
