Visit of the Bishop of Beverley
The Bishop of Beverley was the guest of Mr. W. H. Chambers at the Dale, Conisbrough, on Sunday, visiting for the purpose of supporting church work at Denaby Main.
His lordship attended the early celebration of Holy Communion in the chancel of the New School Church at 8 a.m., where he himself officiated and delivered an address. He was assisted by the Rev. R. P. Roomeare, curate-in-charge, and nearly eighty communicants were present.
The Bishop’s address was based on Ephesians vi. 10: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.” He spoke briefly on the Christian’s continual need for spiritual strength and emphasised the certainty of finding that strength in Christ, who provides the means for obtaining strength for every need.
At 10.30 a.m. the Bishop conducted a confirmation service in the church. Among the clergy present were the Rev. G. H. Stock of Conisbrough and the Rev. R. P. Roomeare. Nine candidates were presented from the district of Denaby Main. A large congregation attended the service and listened attentively to the Bishop’s address to the candidates before and after confirmation.
The acting churchwardens, Messrs. Chambers and Hughes, together with the sidesmen for the day—Messrs. Bellamy, Dobbs, Edwards, and Hutchinson—carried out the arrangements for the service efficiently. The offertories collected during the day were devoted to the Sunday school.
