June 1883

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 1 June 1883.

The Denaby Main Co-operative Society

The committee appointed specially to arrange the rules met on Thursday evening, May 17th, and adjourned until Monday, 21st May, when they completed their duties. A general meeting was called for Thursday 24th May, when Mr. W. H. Chambers was chairman. He called upon Mr. Houldsworth, who had been secretary pro tem., to read the rules.

This being done a resolution was passed that a treasurer and secretary for the society be elected, and the meeting be adjourned for the election of a committee. Members were enrolled that night and the following two days. Up to Monday evening 37 members had paid their subscriptions.

It was decided that 16 members form a quorum at all general meetings. The treasurer elected is Mr. Rose, and the secretary Mr. Houldsworth.

On Monday evening, May 28th, the adjourned meeting took place. The members proposed were Messrs. W. H. Chambers, Sylvester, Blunt, Dixon, Cramp, W. Chambers, Dainty, Coy, Dennis, Brown, and Davis. The first seven were elected, the committee consisting of those and the secretary and treasurer.

The committee then proceeded to the election of a president, the lot falling upon Mr. W. H. Chambers. Arrangements were then made for getting rules printed, account books for members, and a seal and motto for the society, after which the meeting closed to await till a future day the result of enquiries as to price, &c., of the articles required.
