Oddfellows Annual Sports

The Oddfellows of Conisbro’ held their fifth annual sports yesterday at the Conisbro’ Cricket Ground, when there was a large attendance of spectators. The officials were—Handicapper, Mr. W. Pratt; starter, Mr. J. A. Simpson; judges, Messrs. G. Curtis and Fitzgeorge; referee, Mr. G. Bartholomew; marksman, Mr. T. Kelly; hon. sec., Mr. H. Savile. The Conisbro’ Brass Band played selections of music, and Professor Du Bonner provided conjuring entertainments. £30 was given in prizes.

The following were the events:—

120 Yards Handicap Flat Race (Open).—Thirteen entered, and the heats, four in number, were won by H. Strawson, Boston; F. Ogley, Conisbro’; H. Swaby, Doncaster; and A. Haigh, Barnsley. The final was a most interesting race, Ogley and Strawson running a dead heat. Result:—1, Ogley, 11½ yards; 2, Strawson, 12; 3, Swaby, 10¼; 4, Haigh, 6.

440 Yards Handicap Flat Race (Open).—There were nine entries, and places in the final were secured by W. J. Taylor, J. Mitchell, and W. C. M. Cleyborn, all of Conisbro’. Result: 1, Taylor, 32 yards; 2, Mitchell, 25; 3, Cleyborn, 30. An easy race.

120 Yards Handicap Flat Race (Members).—Seven contested, and the result was:—1, T. Kelly; 2, F. Senior; 3, J. Smacklock. This was a very close race, the men being all together at the end.

220 Yards Handicap Hurdle Race (Open).—Nine entered, and the event was a most interesting one.
Heat 1: 1, W. J. Taylor, Conisbro’, 13 yards; 2, W. A. Crick, Barnsley, 16.
Heat 2: 1, J. Mitchell, Conisbro’, 10; 2, H. Swaby, Doncaster, 10.
Final: 1, Mitchell; 2, Strawson; 3, Taylor; 4, Crick.

120 Yards Footballers’ Handicap (Open).—Six entered, and it was run in two heats. The first was won by H. Hancock, Micklefield, and J. M. Stoker, Doncaster; the second by W. J. Taylor, Conisbro’, and W. Humphreys, Denaby Main. Final: 1, Taylor; 2, Hancock; 3, Stoker.

An interesting and close performance.
