Horses Astray

George W. Wagstaff, carter, Conisborough, was summoned for allowing his two horses to stray in a public thoroughfare at Conisborough on June 8th.

P.C. Evans swore that on the date in question he was in Denaby Road lying in the middle of the road. Witness turned them into the field from which they had escaped and interviewed the defendant, telling him of his intention to report him. Witnesses had before cautioned the man about the horses.

The defendant, in defence, said two fresh horses had been put into the field with them, and these had driven out the horses in question. Sergt. Ambler corroborated. The place in which the horses had been grazing was not a field at all, but some ground adjoining some freshly-erected houses. The defendant had no right there.

The Bench imposed a fine of 2s. for each horse.
