Alleged Assault on Denaby Colliers.

At the Doncaster West Riding Police Court on Saturday, George Inkles, collier, Mexborough, was summoned for assaulting Joseph Whitehouse and Wm. Poole, colliers, Denaby.

Mr. Gichard appeared for the prosecutors, and Mr. Baddiley for the defendant.

Mr. Gichard stated that on the 2nd inst., between 10 and 11 o’clock, the complainants went into the Ferry Boat Inn at Mexborough.

One of the persons present asked Poole his name was “Bill,” and if he worked at Denaby.

Poole answered that he did work at Denaby, and soon afterwards a number of men left the house.

Ten minutes later Poole and Whitehouse went out, and after going a few yards from the door, they were set upon by seven or eight other men.

Poole was again asked by someone if his name was “Bill,” and when he said it was, one of the men struck him, knocking his cap off.

Poole ran away, and as Whitehouse stooped to pick the cap up he was kicked on the forehead, a wound 1½ inches long being inflicted.

Afterwards the defendant was identified by a man named Scott.

The defence was an alibi, and the Bench, after hearing further evidence, considered this conflicting, and dismissed the case.
