The Proposed Hospital for Denaby

A general meeting of the workmen employed at the Denaby and Cadeby Main Collieries to further consider the question of the proposed hospital for Denaby and to receive the reports of the committees, was held last evening in the Infant Schoolroom, Rossington Street, Denaby. Mr. William Gibbons, the chairman of the committee, presided, and there were present the secretary, Mr. Leebetter; Mr. H. Witty, treasurer; Mr. S. Kynaston, vice-chairman; Mr. H. Chambers, one of the trustees, and a few others.

It was stated that it was recommended that the proposed institution be called “The Fullerton Hospital,” the site having been given by Mr. Fullerton. The following trustees had been elected:—Mr. W. H. Chambers, Rev. J. Brookes (vicar), Mr. Thomas Weston, and Mr. J. Marriott (Denaby), and Mr. J. Cooper (Conisborough), representing the workmen at the separate collieries.

The treasurer (Mr. Witty) reported that they had a balance in hand of £131 10s. 10d., whilst he estimated that their average income per year would amount to about £600.

Mr. Chambers said they ought not to go in for a large hospital, but one that would meet the requirements of Denaby. Referring to the proposed new institution at Mexborough, if the Mexborough people required a larger institution simply for the gratification of personal vanity (laughter), then let them by all means have one, but he advised them Denaby to go in for a hospital just large enough to meet their requirements.

Mr. Smethurst, the architect, submitted a sketch plan of the proposed institution. Drs. Twigg and Craik also spoke on the necessities of having an up-to-date hospital.
