Assault at Conisborough

Thomas Ready, miner, Denaby, was charged with assaulting George Duffield, of Denaby, on May 5th, at Conisborough.

Prosecutor asked to be allowed to withdraw the case but permission was refused. Prosecutor then stated that he saw the defendant with others playing pitch and toss. He went up to them when defendant knocked him down and kicked him brutally in the face. His eye was even now bloodshot from the effects of the kick, and his sight which had been severely injured was not right yet. He had given the defendant no provocation for the assault.

The defendant said the reason why he struck complainant was because he had been throwing stones at him. This the prosecutor denied.

The Chairman said the defendant had already been summoned three times for committing assaults but he had made it up by “squaring” the parties, and he had evidently tried to do this in the present case. If he came before the Court again on a similar charge he would be sent to the House of Correction without the option of a fine. Defendant for the offence in question was fined 30s. including costs.
