Meeting of Denaby Main Miners

Meeting of Denaby Main Miners

Last night a crowded meeting of the Denaby Main miners was held in the lodge-room. Mr. F. Croft presided. It was resolved to continue the levy for the men who are out of work in the district. The sheep shearers of Sheffield appealed for assistance, and it was resolved that the district make them a grant.

The Chairman referred to the rumours in the papers about a reduction in wages. He did not believe there was any necessity for such a claim. The exports showed a substantial increase on last year’s prices; moreover, what grounds had they, the colliery owners, for any claim?

Several members said there was more need for 40 per cent. being put on than 10 per cent. taken off. There were scores of men who had not seen a score since the dispute ended. (Shame.) The cause of this was the overworking of the pits. Unskilled labour ought to be kept out of the pits, and unless this was done the miner’s position would not be at all safe.
