Assault at Conisborough

John Crooks, miner, Conisborough, was charged with assaulting John Stafford, miner, Conisborough, on the 9th inst.

The complainant said he was returning home from Mexborough on the date in question, when he passed defendant, who was standing at his door. He asked witness what he had got to say, and he answered that he did not wish to speak to him, whereupon defendant knocked him down.

Ann Stafford, Ann Houghton, and Ruth Stafford also corroborated this evidence.

Defendant said he did nothing of the sort. When he saw Stafford he said, “Good-night, Jack,” but Stafford did not appreciate it. Immediately he came and struck him, but he did not strike back.

Defendant was fined 30s., including costs.
