Alarming Fire at Conisborough
At a quarter to twelve on Sunday night a man named Henry Tye, the night watchman at Messrs. Kilner Bros. Glass Works, Conisborough, discovered an outbreak of fire in the oil and grease stores attached to the works. He at once gave the alarm to the police, and Sergeant Ambler and P.C.’s Truman and Jarvis proceeded to the scene of the fire.
Meanwhile the alarm had been given elsewhere, and about 140 men from the neighbourhood turned out and helped to subdue the fire by means of the steam pumps and hose on the premises.
After about half-an-hour’s work the fire was got under, it not being necessary to call out the Conisborough Fire Brigade.
The damage done is estimated at about £50, and is covered by insurance.
The origin of the fire is uncertain, the stores having been locked up a considerable time, prior to which it was ascertained that everything was perfectly safe. The extreme heat on Sunday is thought to have caused combustion among the materials stored in the shed.
