Alleged Burglar’s Inquisitiveness
John Shaw, alias McNulty, miner, late of Denaby, was charged with having committed a burglary at the Royal Oak Hotel, Hollis Croft, during last Sunday night or Monday morning.
On Monday morning Mrs. Hawley, mother-in-law of Mr. Newbold, the landlord, discovered a man in her bedroom, and raised an alarm. The house was searched, and it was found that the visitor had entered and escaped by the kitchen window.
An examination of the room showed that a coral necklace, a silver watch and chain, three silk handkerchiefs, a skirt, and 4s. 6d. had been stolen.
On the Monday night Shaw visited the house, made inquiries about the robbery, and even asked Mrs. Hawley if she could identify the man she had seen. The police had been making inquiries in the meantime, and Shaw was arrested this morning by Police-constable Bartram.
Prisoner was remanded for a week.
