A Violent Prisoner at Mexborough
At the West Riding Police Court, Doncaster, yesterday, Joseph Shaw, miner, Denaby Main, was charged with having been drunk and disorderly, assaulting Police-constables Swann and Slade, and doing damage to uniform.
On Saturday Swann saw the miner very drunk and disorderly at Mexborough, and advised him to go home. Instead of taking the advice he swore and struck the officer repeatedly, doing the same to Slade when he came upon the scene.
Before being handcuffed Shaw seized Swann by the trousers and tore the material considerably. Some of his friends came up in the hope of effecting his rescue, but Swann took forcible measures to cope, with the result that he and two others decamped.
Shaw was fined £2 13s., including costs.
