Theft from a Doncaster Shop
Phoebe Cremer, a married woman of New Conisbrough, was charged with stealing bottles of pickles and several pounds of ham from a grocer’s shop in Denaby on a Sunday night.
The prosecution stated that the shop was busy at the time, and that the defendant was observed placing items under her apron. Some of the goods were later found on the shop floor. The total value was given as 5 shillings.
In her defence, it was claimed that she had purchased the pickles, though not paid for the ham. The magistrates found her guilty under the relevant Act and ordered her to pay costs amounting to 28 shillings and 4 pence.
