Bookmaker Committed
A New Conisboro’ bookmaker, named Thomas Gough, who is well-known to the authorities at Doncaster, was the defendant in two cases, he being charged with having been drunk and disorderly at Mexboro’, on the 27th October, and also with assaulting P.c. Hudson.
The defendant did not appear.
Police-Constable Hudson stated that at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, October 27th, he was on duty in Albert road, Mexboro’, when he saw Gough, who was very drunk and staggering about the road. He had a greyhound dog with him, and when he got near to witness he made a hissing noise to the dog, and it urged it on to bite him, at the same time using some very bad language.
The dog followed witness, and he had great difficulty in keeping it off. If he had not had a stick the dog would have bitten him several times.
That was the assault he complained of.
The Chairman said there were numerous convictions against the defendant, some of them being for this year.
This time he would be committed for 14 days, with hard labour, on each of the charges, the sentences to run consecutively.
