Denaby Win at Oakwell

The match with the Denaby team at Oakwell, Barnsley, on Saturday, was a well-contested affair. Barnsley, for reasons stated elsewhere, had a weakened side, but they played a smart game against a heavier side, and deserved at least a draw.

The Denaby men played a strong game, though their combination was at times rather loose, especially near goal, whilst Barnsley were repeatedly robbed by the dashing defence, which, however, had good fortune with them.

The old Wednesday keeper, Massey, seems to have lost his nerve, for thrice he muddled the ball after saving, and luckily for him it was scrimmaged away.

Nimrod, the old Barnsley man, played a useful game, and the Denaby left wing were always prominent.

On the Barnsley side Sylph gave a good exhibition. Bennett was strong at half-back, whilst the somewhat juvenile front line had not a little dash about them.

Kelly, despite his lameness, was very useful, and Moxon, the lad from the local Higham Club, though playing outside, was in good shooting form.

Barnsley Reserve v. Denaby United

At Barnsley, the play was of a give-and-take character in the first half, and it was not till nearly the interval that Reid scored for Denaby, and a few minutes later Kelley equalised.

Immediately on the re-start, Nimrod scored a capital goal for Denaby. Then from a nasty bit of play by Massey, Barnsley had a penalty granted, from which a goal was scored.

Straight from the kick-off Roper ran down and scored again, the game ending:—Denaby United, 3 goals; Barnsley Reserves, 2 goals.
