The Game at Denaby

The match at Denaby between the United and Wednesday Reserve was not a particularly good one. The visitors were unquestionably the better side, being far smarter on the ball than the home team, who never had the measure of their opponents. Wednesday thoroughly deserved their victory, although the completeness of it was assisted by a couple of penalties, which were both converted by Stewart. The latter and Simpson made an ideal wing, each playing delightful football. Roper and Sheldrake were the pick of the Denaby team, Taylor in goal also saving some splendid shots.

Denaby United v Sheffield Wednesday Reserve

At Denaby, in windy weather, a poor game. The appointed referee had not turned up at the start. Denaby, aided by the wind, had the best of the opening exchanges, Ryans almost scoring by playing over the bar. They once had the ball in the net, but off-side spoiled the point. Wednesday broke through Roper. Wednesday occasionally broke away, but Denaby had generally the better of the half.

Half-time: Denaby United, 1 goal; Sheffield Wednesday Reserve, 0 goal.

The visitors equalised soon after the resumption, and after Beech had hit the crossbar with a splendid shot, Wednesday were awarded a penalty, from which Stewart equalised the score. A moment later Wednesday were awarded another penalty, which Stewart again converted. Wednesday continued to press, and from a fine cross from Simpson, Morrison added the third goal. From Simpson, Morrison scored another for the Reserve.

Result: Sheffield Wednesday Reserve, 4 goals; Denaby United, 1 goal.
