Denaby Main Miner and His Wife

John Henry Gillard, miner, Denaby Main, was charged with deserting his wife. Agnes Gillard.

The wife said she was married to the defendant on Christmas Day, 1901. Defendant deserted her six weeks ago, on Saturday. He left her at Highgreen. He went there to get work, and then left her. The following Saturday he sent her a letter. He had not sent her any money. This was the third time he had left her. She had only one child. He got 6s. 3d. a day.

Mr. Howe, who appeared for the defendant, read a letter from defendant, offering to provide her with a home, and a letter from her refusing to live any more with him.

The Magistrates’ Clerk said she could not leave her husband when she liked.

No order was made.

Mr. Howe said the parties had better try and make the matter up, as they were both young.
