Denaby Utd – Sheffield Wednesday Res 3  Denaby 0

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 06 April 1903

Sheffield Wednesday Reserve 3  Denaby United 0

Fine but boisterous weather favoured the meeting of these teams at Owlerton, and there was a fair attendance present when Denaby started against the wind.

Play at once settled down in their quarters, and Tait was quickly brought into play, whilst Stewart barely missed the mark with a terrific drive. A couple of bursts by Denaby were repulsed by Stacey and Turton, following which an exciting struggle was seen in front of Tait’s goal.

Frequent flag-kicks fell to the home team, but the Denaby defence held out well, although cohesion was sadly lacking among the Wednesday forwards at the critical moment. After a smart attack by Wednesday, during which cries for a penalty were disregarded, play slowed down materially, and although Denaby visited the home goal several times Stubbs was not tested to any great extent.

Resuming, Wednesday were faced by fine goalkeeping by Tait, but all the same Morrison failed to take advantage of one clear opening. Goodlad fouled Simpson twice in quick succession, and from the second free-kick Barron got in a lively centre, from which Simpson headed a pretty goal, and before time was called Simms succeeded in notching a third.

Result:—Wednesday Reserve, 3 goals; Denaby United, 1 goal.
