A Striking Success at Denaby
By their brilliant victory over Worksop on Saturday, Denaby put in the best performance of the season. Denaby were minus the services of Ryans, the most prolific goal-getter of the team, and T. Hardy was brought in at outside left, McNeil crossing over as partner to Lindley. Worksop were without Richardson and Beal.
It was after Worksop had scored that Denaby livened up, and the Worksop defence underwent a severe gruelling. Time after time the home forwards swept down in fine style, and Cole and Gozney were kept at it, whilst for a time the Worksop halves stuck manfully to their work. The ceaseless worrying of the home forwards, however, was bound to be rewarded, and after 35 minutes McNeil evaded the backs, and equalised. Directly on resuming, Lindley, the Doncaster youth, galloped the length of the field, and finished up with a clean, low shot, of which Gozney tried in vain to gather, and during the last 35 minutes of the game Denaby gave their opponents no quarter, and did almost as they pleased, scoring four fine goals in less than 15 minutes.
Denaby United 6 Worksop Town 1
At Denaby, before a moderate attendance. Denaby were early aggressive, and Gozney thrice effected clever saves. Hutton scored a clever goal from a free-kick, whilst Tayles the next minute had to save from Reid.
Denaby retaliated, Biggs hitting the upright with a beauty, and later McNeil skied with a splendid opening. McNeil equalised, following smart work by Chadfield. Denaby still pressed vigorously, and the Worksop goal several times escaped narrowly. Towards the interval Worksop attacked fruitlessly.
Resuming, the Worksop goal escaped marvellously after a fine sprint by Lindley. Most of the play was in the Worksop half, but the Denaby forwards were somewhat erratic in front. However, Roper placed them ahead from a sparkling centre by Goodlad, and the next minute Lindley scored again. McNeil completely beat Gozney with a brilliant shot, and obtained a fourth goal, and later Biggs got two more goals.
Result:—Denaby United, 6 goals; Worksop, 1 goal.
