Unlawfully Wounding at Denaby
Joseph Cane Watkinson, miner, Denaby, was charged with unlawfully wounding Hannah Clamp, of Denaby, on the 10th inst.
Mr. H. Hickmott prosecuted, and Mr. L. S. Thompson, on behalf of Mr. F. Parker Rhodes, defended.
The parties are neighbours, and on the day named the prosecutor went into the prisoner’s house to ask him his reason for circulating reports concerning her which he could not prove. He replied with an offensive gesture, and later, when again spoken to on the subject, gave an equally unsatisfactory answer.
She threw a quantity of ashes at him, upon which he picked up half a brick and threw it at her, striking her on the thigh. She threw some more ashes, and then he struck her on the side of the head with a pick shaft loaded with iron, inflicting a scalp wound some 3½ inches in length.
Committed for trial.
