Narrow Escape of Officials at Denaby Colliery
Early yesterday afternoon Mr. Chambers, manager of the above colliery, along with his uncle (whose name is also Chambers), the under-viewer, whilst engaged in exploring certain disused workings in the pit, were suddenly affected by choke-damp, which put out their lamps, and they were lost in the dark.
Mr. Chambers, the manager, it appears, made his way back to the pit mouth after some time in an exhausted state. A search party was organised, which Mr. Chambers was only prevented by force from joining.
After some dangerous searching they discovered the under-viewer (Mr. Chambers’ uncle), who was brought out as speedily as possible.
Both are now going on favourably.
