Alleged Theft of a Cheque at Conisborough

At Doncaster on Tuesday, Morris Henry Booth, of Conisborough, was charged with stealing a cheque for £18 6s. 5d., from his father’s bedroom on Monday.

Mr. Thomas Booth, sickle manufacturer, Conisborough, deposed that he left a cheque in his bedroom under a box on the top of a chest of drawers.

He went out, and locked the bedroom door, but left the key in the lock.

His son had no permission to take the cheque.

Mary Martin, wife of Mr. Martin, of the Eagle and Child, said that prisoner handed her the cheque for £18 6s. 5d., and asked her to cash it.

He said his father wanted it cashing, but he was away from home.

Witness pointed out that it was not backed.

Prisoner then wrote his own name behind it, and she cashed it.

Prisoner, who was apprehended at Doncaster by Police-sergeant Asher on Monday night, was remanded until Saturday, bail being granted in the sum of £20, his father becoming surety.
