Meeting of Miners at Denaby Main

A largely attended meeting of the Denaby Main miners was held last night.

Mr. Fred Croft presided.

The Chairman referred to the disaster at Dewsbury, where 139 lives were lost. He felt extremely sorry for the bereaved families. It was bad enough when one of their fellow workers were instantly cut off, but worse when 139 were swept into eternity in a day. The case was a heartrending one, and deserved their whole sympathy. Mr. J. Marriott moved a vote of condolence, which was unanimously carried, the members all rising. It was also suggested that pecuniary help should be given them, but this was deferred till after the present dispute.

The Secretary said that the ballot had taken place, which showed that 919 were for no reduction, and not one for. It was resolved that the representatives from the Yorkshire district urge that decisive measures be taken with those colliery owners who have made contracts at under prices at the Miners’ Conference, which will be held at Birmingham on Wednesday next.

It was also resolved that they receive no pay from the Association should a strike take place till three weeks have been played.

A discussion arose as to the men working at the new colliery at Cadeby, who had not received notice. It was pointed out there were no bye-laws established at the colliery yet, and therefore the men could cease at a minute’s notice.

It was resolved that no stocks be filled up, should a strike take place.
